Everyone has lost an afternoon to a crash. You were in the middle of something good, you had not saved for forty minutes, and the software closed. The built-in autosave helps, until you find out it kept one file, overwrote it at the wrong moment, or filled a folder with backups nobody can tell apart.
I built AutoSaver so that never costs me more than a few minutes again. Initiate it once and it saves a clean, versioned copy of your scene on a timer, only when something actually changed, and quietly removes the oldest copies so the folder never grows out of control. It runs alongside the built-in autosave rather than replacing it.

✨ What it does
💥 Crashed before you saved
Crashes do not wait for a convenient moment. Without a recent backup, the only way back is to redo the work from memory.
⏱️ Saves on its own, or right now
Click Initiate and AutoSaver starts running: the panel shows the state, the session, the last save and a live countdown to the Next Save. When you reach a moment you do not want to lose, Save Now writes a backup immediately, without waiting for the timer.
🔹 Every setting, in both apps
Everything lives in one panel: where backups go, how they are named, how often they happen, and how many are kept. The Blender sidebar and the Maya window hold the same settings, so a studio using both sets it up the same way.
🧹 Old backups clean themselves up
An autosave that never deletes anything is a folder full of clutter. With rolling cleanup on, AutoSaver keeps the number of backups you choose and removes the oldest one each time a new one is written. Turn on the size limit as well and it keeps the folder under a maximum size in MB. Only files that match its own detection string are ever removed, so your other files are left alone.
⏰ Customize the time
Set the interval in minutes to match how you work. Save only if changed skips a backup when nothing happened since the last one, and the idle timeout stops it from saving over and over while you are away from the desk.
📝 Customize the template
Backups are named from a template you control, built from tokens: the scene name, year, month, day, session and version number, for example {base}_autosaver_{mm}{dd}_{ver}. Set the version prefix and the number of digits, and every backup sorts in order and shows the day it was made.

The same tool in both applications. Blender keeps it in the sidebar with a list of recent backups you can load directly; Maya keeps it in its own window, with Export Preference to carry your setup to another scene or another artist.

🖥️ Requirements
- Blender: 4.0 or newer recommended. It loads on 3.6 and up, but 4.0+ is what gets tested.
- Maya: 2022 or newer
📦 What you get
- Blender version: AnimPal_AutoSaver_2026_01.zip (Blender add-on). Install through Blender: Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > Install (Install from Disk in Blender 4.2+), and pick the ZIP.
- Maya version: AutoSaver_v2026_01.zip (Maya add-on). Unzip anywhere, drop shelf_AnimPal_Maya.mel on a Maya viewport, then press Install on the shelf and pick this folder.
🚫 What it does not do
- It does not replace saving your real file. Backups are copies next to your work; your main scene file is still yours to save.
- It does not recover work from before it was running. Initiate it, or turn on auto-start, and it protects you from then on.
- It does not touch files it did not create. Cleanup only removes files that match its detection string.

- Blender or Maya: pick the version for the software you use. Each comes as Personal or Studio.
- Blender + Maya: both versions for one person, for less than buying them separately.
- Personal: one person, on every computer they work on.
- Studio: up to 10 people in one team.
- Commercial use is fine. The Blender version is GPL v3, as Blender requires of add-ons.
❓ FAQ
Do I pay again for updates?
Yes. Fixes for serious bugs are free. Beyond those, you keep the version you bought, and later versions are available as a paid upgrade.
Can I use it on more than one computer?
Yes. A licence covers one artist on every computer they work at, at home and at the studio.
Can I use it for commercial work?
Yes. Use it on personal, client and studio projects. Please buy a licence for each person, or a Studio licence for your team.
Does it work on Mac?
Yes. One thing to watch: Safari unzips downloads automatically, and Blender needs the ZIP itself. Before downloading, turn off Safari > Settings > General > "Open 'safe' files after downloading", or download with another browser.
The install fails, or the add-on doesn't show up.
Install the ZIP file itself, without unzipping it first. In Blender: Edit > Preferences > Add-ons > Install (Install from Disk in Blender 4.2+), and pick the ZIP. In Maya: unzip, drop shelf_AnimPal_Maya.mel on a viewport, then press Install on the new shelf.
