Ever had to deliver Specular/Gloss textures on a project you authored in Metal/Roughness, or vice versa? Unfortunately, it's not as simple as flipping to another shader and exporting since the new shader requires channel data that was never authored in your previous shader, forcing you to either rebuild those channels by hand, or endure the gruelling work of manually converting/masking your textures in Photoshop.
Alloy solves that in a few clicks, without ever leaving Substance Painter.
Alloy is a free plugin + set of filters that converts between M/R and S/G workflows inside your existing project. A few clicks will automatically add the filter to the top of your layer stack and your channels convert instantly. No manual channel packing, no duplicate projects, no leaving the workflow you are comfortable with.
What it does:
- Converts Metal/Roughness ⇄ Specular/Gloss non-destructively, in either direction
- Automated layer setup; one-click channel setup and passthrough fill layer creation via a custom Alloy menu
- Preview your conversion live by switching shaders quickly and easily via a custom Alloy menu
- Matched export presets that output correctly-named, correctly-packed textures ready to ship
- Automatic application of viewport settings for proper texture authoring
- Includes a full PBR authoring guide explaining why certain conversions look the way they do, and how to get clean results
Conversion math is based on Joe "EarthQuake" Wilson's PBR documentation, and the whole thing installs with a double-click.

I hope this free plugin helps you out on current and future projects, maybe even gets you out of a tight spot. I've deliberately kept it free as a way of giving back to the 3D community. If you find it useful, feel free to share the link with others; an honest review/rating is the only thing I'd ask for in return!
Alloy was designed, built, tested, and iterated by Eric Correia. The conversion approach, filter logic, export conventions, and workflow design are all original. Claude was only used to assist with Python and SD implementation to package content into a polished, installable tool.
Tested on Substance Painter 12.0.1; Alloy relies on some newer and some legacy internal APIs that can shift between versions. If you're on an older version and something breaks/doesn't install correctly, see Manual Setup below for a fully manual workaround.
