I once tried to create a base mesh myself. It is definitely not as easy as it looks. I'm very happy with this base mesh! It has great proportions and because the different parts are separate, you can easily tweak them to your liking. Wrapping a well fitting and behaving skin around this mesh is good practice for your topologizing skills, though.
