“How the heck did you do that?” Is something I get a lot. I usually answer by waving my hands in mystic passes and shouting, “Magic! I use MAAAAGIC!! I hung by one leg from a stupa in Tibet and slept in Yak dung for years to learn the secrets to making models like this! And I can’t tell you, lest your mind become unmoored by my revelations and you go MAD! Mad I tell you! MAAAAAD! BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA….”
Yes, I do talk like that, usually after my sixth cup of coffee. But the truth is, my friends, that with the right training and a couple of easy-to-use plugins, you too can rant about mystic powers granted by the Elder Gods and people will believe you! That or they back slowly out of the room and call building security. Yeah. Probably the latter. It's best if you go easy on the ranting.
But my point is, ranting aside, SketchUp can make highly detailed and dead-accurate models that you can easily turn into clean and legible working drawings. And the cool part is that you can move like greased lightning while you do it. I am not joshing you, Young Padawan, keep a bowl of ice handy in case your mouse catches fire!
This tutorial package contains all you need to know about how to use component instancing, symmetry, a select group of free plugins, and some geometry off the 3D Warehouse to make a complex and detailed structure. What’s more, I’m slacking the job here. That’s right, this is a low-detail model I am making, just to show you how the workflow...flows. (Nope, that line definitely needs work). The point is, that you can scale up the detail as you like. That's not the hard part!
The five hours (and then some) of tutorials in this package will teach you how to leverage SketchUp’s component system and the Flowify and Truebend plugins to make complex structures with enough accuracy that Clem and Scooter will not laugh at you when you ask them to build it. Take that Rhino!
This tutorial requires a working knowledge of SketchUp Pro. You can use any version of SketchUp Pro, back to SUPro 2018, but Trimble only supports versions 2021, 2022, and 2023, so the more current you are the better.
The package Includes:
Over 5 1/2 hours of action-packed video tutorials
Sketchup 2018 files of all the study models used in the tutorial videos.
