Draw detailed scenes in Line and color!
This is a mini self contained workshop aimed to help you better understand the digital line and color process. Over the course of 3 separate tutorials chronicling the creation of 3 separate images you will discover different processes for building scenes, using Photoshop to develop comicbook and graphic novel style worlds.
What is included:
- Narrated Process videos for all images. (Between 2 and 5 hours each)
- Additional Full length real-time process videos for two of the images (7+ Hours each).
- Supplemental videos covering tips and thoughts on things like construction drawing and color theory. (5+ Hours)
- PSDs for all images.
- Photoshop Brushes and Actions.
Topics that are covered:
The main focus of this workshop is to discuss "Process" and how to get from an idea to your finished image. Each main tutorial section has a fully narrated process walk through discussing it's creation.
There are also additional videos that cover some of the more theoretical and technique based concepts. These videos are aimed at unpacking the more complicated subjects that are difficult to cover properly during the main tutorials.
Technical aspects covered:
- Brushes
- How to build a Brush Set
- Basic Photoshop Line and Color Theory (layers and masking etc)
- File Resolution
- Selections
- Shading and Rendering via Adjustment Layers and Blending Modes
- Color Adjustment
Theory based aspects covered:
- Construction and Form Drawing
- Choosing Color Schemes
- Lighting
- Style
- Line Theory
- Visual Storytelling
- Visual Hierarchy
All of these topics are viewed through the lens of creating scenes. And how ideas make it from the artist's mind into finished images through process.
Who is this for?
This is for the artist who is trying to make the leap from drawing simpler images (pinups or just characters) to drawing scenes/full Illustrations that have a strong sense of narrative.
If you are already an advanced artist and just want to check out the process I am using to pick up a few tips then it should be easy to simply focus on the main tutorials.
I have included additional material to help out anyone who might not have a full grasp of how to manage a big illustration in Photoshop. And have tried to cover many of the general theory components involved in creating a complex Illustration.
Some initial understanding of Drawing, Digital Art and Photoshop is required to get the most out of this workshop.
Who made this:
All of the images and tutorials are created by me Tim Mcburnie. I'm a Freelancer from Australia and I have been drawing professionally using the Line and Color style for over 15 years. During that time I have drawn French Comicbooks/BD, Illustration, and Concept Design (for characters and environments). All using pretty much the same process. Which is covered in this workshop.
If you have any additional questions please get in touch and hopefully I can help you out.
Notes: The LionRider Tutorial was originally part of my CG Society online course (Drawing for Comics, which ran from 2012-2014 if I recall)) So it mentions a few things which might sound out of context (in terms of assignments for that class), but I liked the original narration track and wanted to keep those thoughts intact vs re-recording.
