Job Description

Cloud Imperium is looking for a Lead Facial Animator to work with the Animation Director and Facial Animation team to assure the highest quality facial animation result within squadron 42 and Star Citizen.

Note: This is one position listed under two locations; Wilmslow and Derby. There is one position to based at either the Wilmslow or Derby studio.

Skills & Requirements


  • Review the work of internal facial animators and outsourced teams to ensure they meet the quality and style expectations of the project
  • Provide constructive critique and mentoring to help the facial animators improve their skills
  • Collaborate with the animation director, design representatives, animation leads, tech leads, and facial animators to implement facial animations within the game engine and meet our high quality level
  • Facilitate weekly reviews with the animation director on internal and external work to ensure quality and style bars are on model
  • Create examples and work with outsourced partners to establish and maintain quality standards
  • Work with the facial animation producer and animation director to develop bids and a deliverable schedule
  • Continue to evolve Star Citizen’s Facial Animation Pipeline process to streamline development 
  • Work with the Tools Team to create and evaluate new tools and improvements to existing tools
  • Ensure actor performances are properly captured
  • Review game character's faces and check whether they have been correctly implemented
  • Partner with designers, programmers, and other departments


  • 4+ years of professional experience in game development in a facial animation capacity
  • Shipped two to three large-scale AAA titles in a lead capacity (PC, current or next-gen consoles)
  • Advanced level of facial capture implementation and polish
  • Positive, solution-orientated individual with a passion for game development
  • A thorough understanding of animation pipelines and the processes involved, from concept to implementation
  • Expert knowledge of Maya and other equivalent software
  • Faceware experience
  • Performance capture experience and expert knowledge of HMC-based facial capturing
  • Experience working with both internal and external vendors and keeping them on-model
  • Ability to create fluid, smooth, realistic animations with a specific demonstration of animation fundamentals
  • Experience with next-generation AAA game engines
  • An understanding of effective asset creation and optimization
  • High degree of self-motivation and initiative
  • Inherent ability to bring out the best in people, remains positive, ability to motivate your team
  • Expert in time management and verbal and written communication
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and act on feedback from the team
  • Open to critique
  • Passion and constant drive to stay up to date with the latest technology and new techniques
  • Ability to properly document required processes
  • Excellent English communication and written skills
  • Willing to relocate to Wilmslow or Derby, UK
  • International travel may be required as part of the role


  • Knowledge of Lumberyard
  • Experience with rigging
  • Python/MEL scripting
  • Strong interest in sci-fi themes
