Job Description

Laguna College of Art + Design, is seeking a full-time experienced Assistant Chair, of Game Art. The College is located in an internationally recognized arts colony in Laguna Beach, California and offers a diversity of majors in Animation, Graphic Design and Digital Media, Fine Art, Game Art, Illustration and Entertainment Design.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Chair of Game Art is a full-time faculty member who reports to the Chair. The Assistant Chair works alongside the Chair in the routine administration of the major.  Together the Chair and Assistant Chair will work to drive the Game Art major into the future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Teaching and Faculty Duties

  • Teaches a full course load of 18 units per year and maintains regular on campus office hours (classes may include: 3D Modeling, Game Prototyping, Digital Painting, etc.)
  • Instructs, manages, and supervises students in classrooms through demonstrations, discussions, visual aids, field trips, individualized instruction, and lectures
  • Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught
  • Attends faculty senate meetings; serves on committees as assigned
  • Assist students in course scheduling
  • Advises students in career goals
  • Participates in departmental retention events; attends gallery openings; helps develop the viewbook and other publications

Summary of Assistant Chair Duties

  • This job is focused around helping game students not only obtain their career goals, but also expose them to other opportunities that they may not have considered
  • Assist chair in creating a positive learning environment for students
  • Assists department advisers, Chair, and other faculty in maintaining a fantastic game program
  • Maintains knowledge in program curriculum and keeps it up to industry standards
  • Participates in Admissions recruitment events such as Nasad and LCAD portfolio days, priority registration, LCAD Open House, New Student Events, and assists with transcript/portfolio evaluation of transfer students
  • Helps create connections with other LCAD majors and other schools
  • Helps conduct perform annual evaluations of faculty
  • Works with Chair and Faculty in development of departmental policies, curriculum content, instructional standards, and evaluation methods
  • Participates in student assessment, including Advancement Review

Skills & Requirements

Position Requirements, Experience and Education

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Game or Entertainment industry desired
  • Five + years of teaching experience desired
  • Art/graphics skills preferred
  • Some administrative supervisory experience preferred
  • Self-motivated, focused, positive attitude and proactive
  • Ability to multi-task and work in fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with all levels of employees, management, students, industry open house participants and community members
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Unity, Unreal, and Autodesk 3DS Max (or equivalent)
  • Intermediate Microsoft Word and Excel software programs preferred (or equivalent)

Physical Essential Functions

Siting, keyboarding, may lift up to 20 lbs. without assistance, grasping, pulling, pushing, reaching, and moving from one place to another. This position takes place indoors in an office environment sitting at a desk and working in front of a computer. Occasional bending, stooping and squatting.
